Dr. Thomas Sack has retired from MRIGlobal.  As the President and Chief Executive Officer, (November 2012 - July 2022) he has been responsible for all MRIGlobal research operations, generating approximately $100 million annually in contract research in global health, energy, and national security and defense.

Dr. Sack managed nearly 600 technical staff, including chemists, biologists, engineers, and microbiologists, working in 10 U.S. locations and overseas. He was responsible for MRIGlobal’s partnership in the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, which managed more than $400 million in research at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, for the U.S. Department of Energy.

With more than 30 years’ experience, Dr. Sack is skilled in developing highly performing interdisciplinary teams to address unique technical issues.  He managed operational aspects of more than 190,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratories, biosafety containment facilities, chemical surety operations, a mobile laboratory production facility, as well as more than 150 acres of agricultural field stations and a solar technology test facility.

Prior to this position, he served as Senior Vice President and Director of Technical Operations; Director of the Chemical Sciences Division and Vice President of Midwest Operations for MRIGlobal. He was responsible for the management, fiscal monitoring, and strategic planning for technical professionals providing scientific support to clients in government and industry. His project portfolio ranged from rapid-response assignments to long-term programs in the areas of chemical weapons detection, instrument development, environmental analytical chemistry, chemical synthesis, proteomics, and mass spectrometry. His responsibilities included safety, quality, and security programs; Dr. Sack led MRIGlobal’s successful certification to the International Organization Standardization’s (ISO) 9001:2008 quality management standard.

Dr. Sack’s technical specialty encompasses high-performance applications of mass spectrometry, the chemistry and detection of chemical warfare agents and related materials, analytical method development for trace analysis, and program management.

Dr. Sack received a Bachelor of Science degree (Summa cum Laude) in Chemistry from Rockhurst College; he also holds a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He joined MRIGlobal in 1985. Dr. Sack is a member of the American Chemical Society and has coauthored more than 50 publications and technical papers.

Dr. Sack is an advocate for science education and serves on the Board of Directors of Science Pioneers, Kansas City and previously on the Executive Advisory Committee for FIRST Robotics, Kansas City Region.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Sustainable Energy and on the Institutional Advisory Committee of the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute.
