Compensation Range: $90,000 – $110,000, annually
This position is full time and eligible for benefits, may consider creative part time arrangements

Summary

BioNexus KC is seeking a collaborative, knowledgeable and dynamic Director of Regional Science & Innovation to bring technical expertise and leadership to our organization. This role will be pivotal in engaging with researchers and technical experts, administering our research grants program, coordinating the organization’s research and data activities, and enhancing STEM/STEAM education. The ideal candidate will be vital to advance the strategic life sciences and healthcare priorities for the culturally diverse KC region.

 

Nature and Scope

Bring research and technical expertise to the organization. Administer the BioNexus KC research grants program, including pre- and post-award processes, researcher engagement, and communication with current and potential funders/sponsors.

Use data to develop and generate regional reports related to the life sciences ecosystem. Advance regional life sciences initiatives by identifying and qualifying collaborative research opportunities (including proposal coordination and writing) and serving as the technical liaison between staff and administration of stakeholder institutions and outside agencies. Coordinate BioNexus KC research and data acquisition activities as assigned by the CEO and assist with relevant advisory committees’ activities. Serve as a resource in efforts to enhance STEM/STEAM education across all educational levels. Provide additional research/technical support consistent with the evolution of BioNexus KC and the region’s priorities.

 

Principal Accountabilities

General accountabilities in addition to those above
Proactively initiate, develop, and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders. Follow through with commitments and foster mutual trust with stakeholders. Effectively communicate relevant project information, including well-organized presentations, as needed within a culturally competent framework.

Promote collaboration among stakeholder institutions to develop specific research initiatives, contract/grant opportunities, and other related funding opportunities. Identify resource strengths, including staff, facilities, and equipment capabilities in each stakeholder institution that may be utilized in addressing specific research project opportunities.

Promote regional collaboration between stakeholder institutions, partner organizations, and industry.

Contribute to the success of BioNexus KC and stakeholder institutions by presenting and promoting strategic research approaches/capabilities and major programmatic objectives to the scientific and technical community, private donors, industry, government agencies, and the lay public.

Work with strategic partners to leverage BioNexus KC’s assets and capabilities in collaborative, multi-institutional approaches to regional life sciences initiatives.

Participate in (and potentially lead) regional consensus-building efforts among multiple, culturally diverse stakeholders and act as a responsible BioNexus KC representative with stakeholders, partners, and the community at large.

Specific unique accountabilities:
Manage all phases of BioNexus KC’s Research Development Grant program from request for proposal development to proposal processing for scientific peer review, through pre- and post-award management. Monitor grant program return on investment.

Work closely with partners to monitor and respond to federal grant opportunities for priority initiatives. Assemble appropriate stakeholders and coordinate submissions.

Collaborate with stakeholders and strategic partners to identify appropriate opportunities to connect entrepreneurs, scientists, and inventors with technology transfer and commercialization assets in the region

 

Job Requirements

Unique professional experience coupled with advanced degree (M.S., Ph.D., M.D., etc) in a life sciences-related field preferred.

Excellent verbal and written presentation skills, including the ability to tell compelling stories, deliver persuasive presentations, clearly communicate scientific discoveries/results, and comfortably engage all levels of the BioNexus KC community (individual researcher to C-suite)

Proven experience in team science and effectively managing multidisciplinary teams to address collaborative research programs.

Knowledge of methods for assessing and protecting intellectual property associated with life-sciences-related technologies. Working knowledge of technology assessment, technology transfer, commercialization, and access to capital.

Demonstrated success in grant writing and/or experience as a grant reviewer for federal or private organizations is preferred. Established knowledge of both national and regional funders that invest in life sciences.

Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic, governmental, industry, and/or nonprofit organization.
