Research grants are made to encourage regional collaborations and stimulate submission of major multidisciplinary life sciences proposals from regional researchers to government and/or private funding agencies.
The grants help generate the critical preliminary data needed to develop competitive proposals. Awards are up to $50,000 for one year and are intended to leverage institutional strengths and investigators collective expertise. Submitted proposals undergo rigorous scientific peer review modeled after that used by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Completed reviews from submitted proposals are provided to investigators, regardless of whether they are selected for funding, which they use to refine future grant proposals.
From 2002 to 2018, BioNexus KC has managed 108 grants totaling $5 million. On average, for every $1 invested in grants, $11.70 has been returned to the region from follow-on funding from federal sources.

Transforming KC Health grants support applied research projects evaluating the impact of increased access to healthy foods and its effects on community health and outcomes. Projects implementing programs and/or interventions addressing health disparities in food insecure populations are also eligible.
This funding mechanism specifically focuses on the genetic basis of diseases that predominately affect children and do not require inter-institutional collaborations.
Nexus opportunities represent a broad range of biomedical research activities, ranging from using naturally occurring diseases in animals as a model for assessing human drug efficacy to repurposing human drugs for use in animal disease.
BioNexus KC has 17 years of experience soliciting, funding, and administering scientific research projects via the Research Development Grant program. Other organizations frequently find themselves in a position of funding scientific research without sufficient infrastructure and/or expertise to determine the highest quality, most impactful projects. BioNexus KC can share our infrastructure and access to expertise to partner with a funding organization to administer a customized grant program.
