Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) is committed to building well-resourced communities, providing individuals with the tools and support needed for a comfortable and fulfilling life. Under the leadership of Jamee Rodgers, PhD, President and CEO, UNI is making strides towards a safer and more economically prosperous Kansas City.
Rodgers is a strong advocate for developing mixed-income spaces where diverse groups can coexist. This approach fosters a richer, more vibrant community, challenging traditional models that isolate low-income housing. “The best way to describe our mission is to think about making a cake. Eggs taste good on their own, but when mixed flour, sugar, and butter, you get a delicious cake. Communities are the same. If you isolate one demographic, you only get the influence of that group. But when you mix them, you create something beautiful that serves many more. That’s our approach to community development,” Rodgers explains.
Rodgers’ dedication to community enrichment is deeply rooted in his upbringing—his father was a pastor and his mother an educator, guiding his path towards community development.
Rodgers emphasizes, “If people hear Urban Neighborhood Initiative and don’t remember anything else, remember that we do what we do with purpose, on purpose. It’s just that simple. It’s very intentional.” As UNI continues to champion this mission, their work is not only about building spaces but also about fostering connections and creating environments where everyone can thrive together.
