No longer just a place to pass through, the city is experiencing a surge of entrepreneurial energy. This dynamic shift is driven by a powerful ecosystem and founders like Tammy Ham, President and CEO of BioNovus Innovations.
BioNovus Innovations emerged from a mission to support the goal of the University of Kansas Cancer Center to become a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
To achieve this," Ham explained, "KU needed to translate research into patient care by developing a new therapy." BioNovus licensed this technology and advanced it through Phase II clinical trials. Even after KU Cancer Center secured the prestigious designation, BioNovus continues to support the Cancer Center's ongoing Comprehensive Cancer Center designation. "We're still collaborating on projects and supporting discoveries from KU by moving them from the bench to the bedside," Ham said. "Additionally, we identify promising startups addressing unmet medical needs. These innovative companies align perfectly with our mission."
Ham’s work with teams across the country led her to a surprising realization - a newfound appreciation for the unique spirit of Midwestern employees.
“I didn’t appreciate the spirit of the Midwestern employee until I expanded my company into other regions of the country. The work ethic, strong sense of community improvement, individual ownership, and willingness to fix what needs fixing. All of that is special here,” Ham said.
Founders in the KC region readily share ideas and challenges, collaborating to overcome growth hurdles. This lack of fear in sharing fosters a win-win environment where everyone benefits from collective knowledge and support and embodies the true essence of Kansas City.
“We embrace anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to build something special here. What truly sets Kansas City apart is the remarkable sense of trust and openness within the startup community,” Ham said.
