Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute Draws National Expert for Annual Dinner
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI) is scheduled to hold its annual dinner on April 10, 2012. This year’s event will feature David M. Livingston, M.D., a well-known champion for the importance of translational research and its impact on the future of medicine.
“The need now isn’t so much for more researchers who will figure out the fundamentals of disease,” said Dr. Livingston. “Today’s need is for physician-scientists whose interests lie in studying the way we take these fundamental discoveries and quickly turn them into treatments that work. This is the essence of ‘translational research’, and it is absolutely critical to the future of medicine.”
Dr. Livingston is Deputy Director of the Dana-Farber (DFCI)/Harvard Cancer Center; Chief of the Charles A. Dana Division of Human Cancer Genetics at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; and the Emil Frei Professor of Medicine and Genetics at Harvard Medical School and DFCI. From 1991-1995, Dr. Livingston served as Director and Physician-in-Chief of DFCI, and he currently serves as Chairman of the Executive Committee for Research at the Institute. In the latter role, he leads the senior faculty group that oversees all aspects of the Institute’s research program.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Livingston to this year’s Annual Dinner,” said Dan Getman, Ph.D., President of KCALSI. “His perspective on the significance of translational research is both timely and compelling as our region embarks on several important initiatives. We see exciting translational research initiatives unfolding all around us, and we are looking forward to inspiring a robust dialogue on the topic in and around this year’s event to propel our region forward.”
The 2012 KCALSI Annual Dinner will be held Tuesday, April 10th at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Registration for the event closes on April 4th.
The KCALSI Annual Dinner is attended by more than 550 civic and business leaders, researchers, educators, and physicians each year. It represents a great opportunity to learn more about the life sciences initiative and to network with community leaders.
