Steven Soper Named 10th Foundation Distinguished Professor

University of Kansas alumnus Steven Soper, a professor in the Departments of Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, will return to Lawrence next summer as KU’s 10th Foundation Distinguished Professor, with appointments in the Departments of Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering.

Soper is a leading international researcher in developing new technologies with important applications for disease detection. His research largely focuses on biomedical devices and the associated assays.  In particular, his group concentrates on the development of in vitro cancer diagnostics based on a combination of innovative methods for isolating circulating tumor cells and the development of nanoscale devices for next-generation sequencing.  More information »

 

Children's Mercy

Children’s Mercy names new leader of research institute

Dr. Tom Curran has been named chief scientific officer and executive director of the Children’s Mercy Research Institute. Curran, originally from Scotland, comes to Children’s Mercy from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he served as deputy scientific director and director of basic scientific research in the Center for Childhood Cancer Research for about 10 years. He also served as a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.  More information »

Peter Dorhout, Interim Vice President for Research

Kansas State University has named Peter K. Dorhout as interim vice president for research, effective Jan. 3, 2016. Dorhout has served as dean of Kansas State University’s College of Arts & Sciences and professor of chemistry since 2012.  Before coming to Kansas State University, Dorhout was the interim provost at Colorado State University-Pueblo. He also served as vice provost for graduate studies, assistant vice president for research and professor of chemistry at Colorado State University-Fort Collins. More information »

Truman Medical Centers Names Sharon Freese, Behavioral Health Chief Operating Officer

Truman Medical Centers has named Sharon Freese as Chief Operating Officer of Behavioral Health.   Freese has more than 25 years of nursing, mental health and healthcare leadership experience. She has served the last 19 years with TMC Behavioral Health in a variety of roles including as a clinical nurse manager, director of nursing, associate administrator of inpatient services and most recently, associate administrator for behavioral health quality, patient safety and risk management.
