Position: Venture Consultant, KC BioHub
Reports To: President and Regional Innovations Officer, KC BioHub
(The consultant will also work closely with the VP of Operations)
Overview
Would you run through a wall to help life science entrepreneurs in KC access the capital they need to grow? Can you translate between angel investors and entrepreneurs? Can you build a syndication network in your sleep? We need your expertise!
The KC BioHub seeks a Venture Manager passionate about increasing access to capital for life science entrepreneurs in Kansas City. The consultant’s immediate and primary responsibility will be to develop an angel investor education program designed to entice more investors to consider angel investments in regional life science companies.
Program: KC BioHub
The KC BioHub is a consortium of more than 100 local non-profits, institutions of higher education, local governments, startups, and industry partners within the greater Kansas City region (stretching from McPherson and Manhattan, KS to Columbia, MO) that work together to grow our regional biologics and biomanufacturing capabilities. The consortium has led the effort to designate Kansas City as a Regional Technology and Innovation Hub. The KC BioHub consortium is a program of BioNexus KC.
Principle Accountabilities:
• Curriculum design: Design, develop, and seek feedback to refine a curriculum designed to educate prospective angels with technical expertise about the basics of angel investment, and all angels about important considerations when investing in life science companies.
• Entrepreneur outreach: Build trusting relationships with local life sciences entrepreneurs, serving as the internal subject matter expert on their needs and challenges.
• Angel investor outreach: Recruit new prospective and active angel investors interested in investing in life sciences companies; develop and share a compelling pitch about the opportunities and ROI of life science investment.
• Program delivery and management: Plan and execute all aspects of delivery of our Angel Investor Education program; set and measure progress towards operational goals and timelines.
• Venture capital partnership development: Build relationships with leading life science investors regionally and nationally, serving as a connector and conduit for local deal flow; identify and champion opportunities to elevate KC’s innovation ecosystem on a larger stage.
• Due diligence leadership: Lead development of gold-standard due diligence process sufficient to identify and communicate the technical and commercial readiness levels, team dynamics, market dynamics, and SWOT of KC’s most promising life science deals.
• Administration and compliance: Ensure that the KCBioHub’s interactions with investors and entrepreneurs are compliant with all state and federal laws and regulations, and our organization’s activities are above reproach.
Proposal Guidelines
The proposal should demonstrate subject matter expertise and experience performing relevant scopes of work. The proposal should include a more refined project timeline concurrent with the provided deadlines, a detailed budget, an explanation of elements consultant would prioritize to help meet our primary objectives, and information about the consultant including background, experience working with similar organizations or coalitions, and examples of past work. There is a preference for deliverable based consulting agreement to not exceed $50,000 in six months. All proposals should include a declaration of conflicts of interest if such conflicts exist.
Selection Criteria and Guidelines:
• Demonstrate experience that a high level of expertise in the norms and standards of angel and venture investment.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience facilitating or supporting investment activity, venture capital investment, and/ or angel investors.
• Preference for experience with life-science investment or the regional investment community.
• Experience performing or leading due diligence of startup deals, knowledge of industry-standard processes and tools.
• Advanced understanding of the life-sciences investment landscape, regulatory process, milestones or red flags, and market trends.
• The ability and willingness to both “do” and “teach”.
• Resourcefulness and mission-focused attitude appropriate to a non-profit environment.
• Cost-effectiveness of the proposal and clear breakdown of pricing.
• Quality of references and past performance with similar clients.
• Proposed timeline and ability to meet deadlines.
• Preference will be given to vendors who have relevant industry certifications.
• Preference will be given to vendors located in the KC Region.

• Proposal Review Period: February 28, 2025- March 5, 2025
• Consultant Selection Notification: March 6, 2025
• Project Start Date: March 12, 2025
• Expected Project Completion Date: August 30,2025; option to extend or roll into FTE may be possible based on performance.

• The selected consultant will be required to sign a contract that outlines the terms of the project.
• All proposals should remain valid for 90 days after the submission deadline.
