KCALSI Boosts Bioinformatics in the KC Region

For Release March 13, 2017 (Kansas City, MO)

Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI) is excited to announce the release of a new resource for bioinformatics in the KC region, www.kcbioinformatics.org. Bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to analyze biological data. With large informatics companies and a fertile environment for bioinformatics startups, the KC region has the potential to be a national leader in this industry.

This brand new website represents an array of information regarding bioinformatics capabilities and expertise to leverage assets supporting collaborative research. To bring light to the resources available in the Kansas City region, KCALSI compiled bioinformatics hardware assets and available expertise to facilitate regional collaborations. For those interested in careers in bioinformatics, educational programs are also listed.

“The Kansas City region compares very favorably in terms of bioinformatics capabilities and expertise to other bioinformatics hubs such as the University of Washington and the Broad Institute. Our challenge, however, is that our assets are spread across a large geography between Columbia, MO and Manhattan, KS,” said Keith Gary, Vice President of KCALSI. “Creating a website that catalogs regional assets is an important tool to overcome this geographical challenge.”

The website also highlights the Second Annual 2017 Midwest Bioinformatics Conference taking place on April 13 and 14 at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Powered by KCALSI in partnership with UMKC and Children’s Mercy, this conference is designed for bioinformatics researchers from academia and industry, this year’s conference has an impressive line-up of more than thirty speakers covering topics that include: data structure, data standardization and integration, data visualization, systems strategies, data analysis, image analysis and data application. Local industry professionals will also be conducting mock interviews with registered students following the conclusion of the conference.
