Kansas City Area Life Sciences Offers $50,000 Opportunity for Mitochondrial Dysfunction Research

For Immediate Release: June 5, 2017

KANSAS CITY – Following the success of the first Collaborate2Cure series focused on Cancer Immunotherapy, the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI) brings together the sharpest scientific minds in the region to address the scientific challenges of Mitochondrial Dysfunction for the second Collaborate2Cure series. Created in September of 2016, Collaborate2Cure is designed to enhance regional scientific collaboration to stimulate innovation in solving specific scientific problems.

This series started on May 1st and continues through August 21st at the KU Clinical Research Fairway Auditorium every Monday from 5 – 7 PM. Scientists, clinicians, entrepreneurs, and members of the community are invited to attend in-person or virtually via live webcast to listen to regional experts define their scientific challenges and the types of collaboration they are interested in developing. The program consists of two 15-20 minute presentations, each followed by Q&A, and a networking hour.

Area researchers are presenting on the topic of mitochondrial dysfunction. As the powerhouse of the cell, defects in mitochondrial function are involved in a broad range of disease processes.  KCALSI hopes that the collaborative efforts of Kansas City’s regional scientific community will help develop cures for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and heart disease.

At the conclusion of the series on mitochondrial dysfunction, a request for proposals will be available for new collaborations spawned from the discussions and funding of up to $50,000 for the collaborative research. To be eligible for this award, applicants must have presented during this series and also participate in the weekly meetings in-person or virtually.
