KANSAS CITY, Mo. – How do dolphin diabetes or flamingo heart attacks impact human health?  Discover this and many more fascinating links between animals and humans at this summer’s 2013 Animal Health Research Symposium, featuring keynote speaker Kathryn Bowers, co-author of Zoobiquity: The Astonishing Connection Between Human and Animal Health.

Bowers, whose book was a Discover Magazine Best Book of the Year and a finalist for the AAAS/Science award for Excellence in Science Books, teaches writing at UCLA and is an associate editor with two online magazines.  Bowers and co-author Barbara Natterson-Horowitz, a UCLA cardiologist and psychiatrist, investigate human health with a veterinary perspective in their writing.

“The book takes the reader on a remarkable exploration of animal and human health, and creates a headline presentation for this year’s Symposium theme: “Zoobiquitous Research,” said Dr. Wayne Carter, president and chief executive officer of the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute, one of the Symposium’s sponsors.  “Humans and animals suffer from many of the same diseases, such as cancer and depression,” he said, “and research in such areas can often benefit both.”

Also included among the Symposium speakers are: Dr. Scott Weir, director of the Institute for Advancing Medical Innovation at the University of Kansas Medical Center; Dr. Tonatiuh Melgarejo, associate professor, Department of Human Nutrition at Kansas State University; Dr. Lisa Stehno-Bittel, associate professor, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Kansas Medical Center; and Dr. Rebecca A. Johnson, professor and director, Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri.

The annual Animal Health Research Symposium – jointly sponsored by the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute, the KC Animal Health Corridor, and the veterinary schools at Kansas State University and the University of Missouri – will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 26, at the Kansas City Convention Center.

Symposium registration and additional information will be available at www.kclifesciences.org/events/animal-health-symposium.
